so to get you vacay-ready, friends of THE JOURNAL Anthony Nader and Davroe have teamed up to create your #how-to hair guide for summer 19/20. Get scrolling.

CHISELLED, MESSY WAVES

A favourite of the RAW girl, the Chiselled Messy Wave will take you right through from brunch to evening drinks (transition is everything during the warmer months) and is neither too set, too done nor too difficult to master. Picture cool girl, messy waves with a touch of refinement. This look is all about the base. Heading into summer, blonde clients tend to favour warmer, complexion-flattering tones, with hero hues being biscuit and caramel. Colours should be warm and never brassy. For best results, keep shades in line with your clients’ natural hair and skin tones.

Likewise balayage remains a popular option for colour connoisseurs and first-timers alike, with hair retaining its sun-kissed finish as colour grows out. The ideal cut to complement? According to RAW, it’s blunt cuts. Straight ends give an illusion of chiselling; emphasising colour variation. As for waves? Prep hair with a light spritzing of Davroe’s Murray River Sea Salt Spray to enhance hairs’ natural body and texture. Using a styling iron, next create a series of simple bends – leaving the roots natural, and beginning styling at cheek length. Be sure to leave ends straight.

Pro tip: rather than curling the entire head of hair, you can achieve a quicker, more natural result by styling random sections on the outskirts of the hair. After raking styled sections through with fingers, add Davroe’s Cloud Volumising Texture Powder from the roots to mid-lengths, for added volume and density. A weightless styling powder, Cloud adds texture, body and movement to hair, allowing for lasting hold without weighing hair down.

THE PULLED OUT BRAID

NFURLED-BRAID

Your favourite crimped ‘do gets a millennial makeover. Inspired by last season’s Ralph and Russo runway, RAW’s statement, pulled out braid is the perfect trend for clients looking to achieve a simple wave at home. The best bit? It requires no heat setting, so it’s not only gentler on strands but also perfect for those styling off-days. To create this cheeky crimp, begin with washed and towel dried hair. Next, prep with Davroe’s Murray River Sea Salt Spray before dividing hair into two even sections.

Finally, create a tight French braid on either side of the head, before leaving hair to set overnight. Up next, the fun bit. Simply unravel braids on either side and voila… hair is crimped to perfection. But it doesn’t stop there. Now that you have your base shape, it’s time to define those waves. The RAW team suggest applying Davroe’s Shine Fluid from mid-lengths to ends to smooth any frizz, fluff or fly-aways. With its weightless formula, Shine Fluid adds just the right amount of polish to both natural and styled hair, without weighing down or compromising shape. Shake it out, and you’re good to go. Serum can be applied to either damp or dry hair, and as with most miracle substances… a little goes a long way. Start with a coin sized portion, work through and add more if need be. Shine Fluid is also a must-have for coloured and/or treated hair, and is the perfect hydrator for strands over the summer period (it’s not just our skin that’s prone to dehydration!) The RAW team maintain that client education is vital and the best way to preserve hair between visits is to ensure clients engage in at-home maintenance. An investment in good products means an investment in your hair

SOFT, EMBELLISHED UP-DO

Because, who doesn’t love a chic chignon. Or hair embellishments for that matter? The perfect, effortless occasion look, this soft, embellished up-do is no doubt a summer staple; a go-to for evening canapés or a little Wedding sparkle.

To achieve the look, begin by pulling hair into a simple low ponytail – leaving out front strands/fringe. Next, divide your ponytail into two sections and gently wrap pieces around each other (in an anti-clockwise motion) to create the bun formation. Davroe’s Cloud Volumising Texture Powder can be combed through, and built up to thicken hair and create added grit pre-styling. What’s more its perfect for light and darker hair shades alike, thanks to its transparent finish. Gently puff and spread through to suit. Pro tip: begin with a centre part for a more youthful look.

Your bun needn’t look perfect: the point is to create a modern,  flat formation rather than a suburban, structured style. After pinning the chignon into place, complete the style by softly tonging front strands – turning outwards from the face. Add a spritz of Davroe Ultimatum non-aerosol hair spray, and you’re ready to accessorise. For this look, the RAW team enhanced the chignon with a sprinkling of C/MEO x KELA Shine-on Charms in gold. Fun fact: thanks to KELA’s non slip-technology, charms will remain in tact from sunset to… sunrise.

MIU MIU WAVES

Inspired by last season’s Miu Miu runway, this look heroes cascading waves and a sophisticated, frontal quiff. Prep hair with Davroe Formation styling lotion to condition lengths/ends and aid in curl retention. After blow-drying through, proceed to curl hair in alternating directions using a small barrel curling tong. To maintain longevity, the RAW team recommend pinning tonged curls at the roots and allowing sections to cool before unravelling. Gently brush out pre-formed curls whilst applying Davroe’s Cloud Volumising Texture Powder through roots and mid lengths.

For that trademark, Miu Miu finish, the look is completed with a dimensional quiff. Begin by backcombing front sections of the hair to establish volume. Next, pull sections into place and pin. The idea is to keep your quiff slightly inconsistent; asymmetrical rather than neat and tidy.

On the colour front, the RAW brunette opts for warmer, earthier tones come summer, with clients favouring woody tones and deep caramels. Other popular colour trends for summer include semi-permanent dyes and gloss glazes; perfect for the colour weary client or those wanting to tone down foils or prior dye jobs. The key goal is to showcase the hair’s health and natural shine, particularly as the summer sun hits.

FRENCH GIRL SHAG

It’s the ultimate cool girl ‘do: moody, understated and quietly confident… but of course. A favourite among models and fashion girls, the French shag is perfect for your wash-and-wear clients, and can be revamped or adjusted to suit any mood, outfit or occasion.

To achieve the look, Anthony suggests establishing a base line before point cutting lengths into shape. Rather than creating a rigid, horizontal shape, hair should be soft, textured and lived-in. Likewise, be sure to keep the front section overgrown. Achieve structural balance by keeping fringe length longest at the corners; this accentuates the oval of a client’s face and immediately ups the cool factor. Long time lover of a heavy bang (case in point), Anthony prefers hair that moves and achieves a lived-in, wispy finish by cutting internally for texture.

For styling, hair is prepped using Davroe Formation styling lotion to condition lengths and prime for heat. Pro tip: to flatten alternated sections and/or make sections tighter on the sides, place temporary hair clips on designated regions to create tension. Using a diffuser, circle heat around the hair – remaining close to the head. The pinned elements will remain tucked and slightly restricted… even after clips are removed.

To complete the look, apply Davroe’s luxe leave-in masque through mid-lengths and ends for added control and grit. As with many of Davroe’s styling staples, less is most certainly more, and Anthony advises on using a small amount of product before building up if necessary. Finally, rake fingers through hair to create a messy finish. Hair can be worn up or down post styling for that chic, rebellious air. As Anthony says: a great hair cut, style and pared back makeup allow  for a clients’ personality to do the talking.
